Lithium Ion Batteries on Qantas

Travelling with Lithium Ion Batteries is becoming increasingly difficult.

Qantas have kindly supplied a with a letter (similar to those supplied to Australian TV Networks) for ACS members outlining the restrictions for crews travelling with spare lithium-ion batteries on Qantas Group aircraft.

It should be noted that it is against the law to travel with spare lithium-ion batteries as checked in luggage, unless they are attached to a piece of equipment. Qantas may delay flights and remove any checked in luggage that contains lithium-ion batteries.

Also: All batteries should be individually labelled with the Watt-hour rating. If the battery manufacturer has not labelled the "Wh" of the battery, it can be calculated by simply multiplying the Amp-hour by the Voltage (Watt Hr = Amps x Volts). For example, a Sony BP-GL95 battery is labelled "14.4V - 6.6Ah". Therefore the Watt-hour rating is 14.4 x 6.6 = 95.04Wh. (i.e. no restriction to the number of spare batteries, but they must be taken as carry on).
