AFTRS to relocate Sydney headquarters to inner Sydney

11 May 05

The Australian Film Television and Radio School (AFTRS) will relocate its Sydney campus to inner Sydney following endorsement of a move in the Australian Government budget.

The Government endorsed a proposal to move the School closer to the working industry in the inner Sydney area, with the final location yet to be finally decided.

Macquarie University will acquire the current building at North Ryde from the School, along with AFTRS interest in the land.

AFTRS Council Chair Danny Gilbert said the School had been looking at a range of site options in the inner Sydney area.

'The new location will be positioning the School closer to the broadcast and digital media industries, which have consolidated near the inner city in recent years,' he said.

'The relocation forms part of a package of measures designed to service industry. A new building will allow the School to continue to evolve and meet the needs of industry practitioners through our continuing professional education and training program, as well as the requirements of our full-time students.'

AFTRS Director Malcolm Long said the relocation of the NSW headquarters was part of a broader plan to expand the delivery of AFTRS services on a national scale.

'We have just relocated our South Australian office to larger premises and our Melbourne office will shortly be moving to the Docklands site,' he said.

Vice-Chancellor Di Yerbury said, 'The success of both Media and International Communications makes it necessary to arrange a new home on campus for those disciplines. The University’s acquisition of the AFTRS facilities will serve that purpose admirably.

'In addition, we’ll be able to re-house some other activities, and demolish some older small buildings that no longer suit our purposes.'

Note: Macquarie University will acquire the current building at North Ryde from the School, along with AFTRS interest in the land. The current AFTRS NSW building was constructed in 1987, prior to the arrival of the digital production techniques and when all of Sydney’s television networks were located on Sydney’s North Shore.
