Through Australian Eyes: ABC foreign correspondents’ exhibition
8 March 2004
The ABC is launching an exhibition celebrating the national broadcaster’s long and continuing commitment to foreign reporting.
The exhibition brings to life the history of the ABC’s foreign correspondents and bureaux from the 1930s to the present.
Photos, audio and video from the archives, recollections by former correspondents and camera crew, historic and modern newsgathering equipment and memorabilia will all be part of the display.
Executive Director of News and Current Affairs, Max Uechtritz, says the exhibition will focus on the people who have reported and filmed the world’s biggest stories over seven decades.
“It’s a clear demonstration of the ABC's enduring commitment to the finest international reporting,” Mr Uechtritz said.
“Some of the legends of Australian journalism – many of them still working in the ABC and across the media – have been at the scene of the most significant international events for the ABC.
“Our foreign correspondents, scattered across the world, see these events with Australian eyes, and bring them home to Australian audiences,” Mr Uechtritz added.
The exhibition at the ABC’s Ultimo headquarters will be launched on Monday March 8 and will run for six weeks until Friday April 16.
The exhibition will then travel to Melbourne and other ABC venues.

Inside the Exhibition
Close to 300 correspondents and camera crew have been based overseas for the ABC since the 1930s.
(This does not include many reporters sent overseas on short assignments for programs such as Four Corners, This Day Tonight, and Foreign Correspondent.)
The exhibition features more than 200 of these correspondents and camera crew in photos and archival video and audio.
It covers the period of the ABC’s presence overseas from the 1930s to 2004.
The exhibition includes around 270 photographs of correspondents and camera crew at work overseas and images of major international stories. These photographs have been selected from a database of around 1,500 images including photographs taken by correspondents and camera crew, their television stories, ABC Archives and the Australian War Memorial.
There are recollections, anecdotes and quotes from around 50 foreign correspondents and camera crew … many of them written especially for the exhibition.
The images and audio-visual material are accompanied by information on the history of the ABC’s international coverage, including the history of the ABC’s news bureaux.
There is an overview of the history of the ABC’s coverage overseas, plus separate sections on:
- World War 2
- The Vietnam War
- Indonesia
- South East Asia
- North Asia
- South Asia
- PNG
- The Pacific
- Europe
- Russia
- The Balkans
- The Americas
- The Middle East
- Africa
- The war in Afghanistan 2001
- The Gulf War 1991

The exhibition includes memorabilia from correspondents and camera crew and historic newsgathering equipment, including David Brill's CP16, a Bell & Howell, and a Sony 3AP Betcam.
