The Australian Film Television and Radio School (AFTRS) will relocate its Sydney campus to inner Sydney following endorsement of a move in the Australian Government budget. The Government endorsed a proposal to move the School closer to the working industry in the inner Sydney area, with the final location yet to be finally decided.

Lighting Masterclass with Semler, Boyd & James

Academy Award winning cinematographer Dean Semler ACS ASC [Dances with Wolves, We Were Soldiers, The Power of One] will join AFTRS to screen parts of We Were Soldiers, starring Mel Gibson, and conduct a Q&A as part of the Lighting Masterclass between Monday 8 December and Friday 12 December.

Dean is back in the country to shoot Stealth, the first film he has shot in Australia since 1989.  He has generously agreed to take half a day out of his preproduction schedule to spend at AFTRS.

Russell Boyd ACS ASC [Doctor Dolittle, Liar Liar, American Outlaws] will also join the Masterclass to do one day of exterior lighting and Peter James ACS ASC [Meet The Parents, Paradise Road, Driving Miss Daisy] will conduct various other classes during the course.

The Masterclass is designed for cinematographers and camera assistants wishing to further their experience.  It will be a unique opportunity to learn from some of the world's best cinematographers, hear their experiences and observe them as they demonstrate their craft.

COURSE DESCRIPTION

This is a film Lighting Masterclass for cinematographers and camera assistants wishing to further their own experience and appreciation of lighting through the invaluable experience of being on set with world class Directors of Photography, as they demonstrate their craft.

OBJECTIVES

In the time honoured method of watching a Master Craftsman at work and thereby sharing his experience, this course will offer the opportunity for the participants to expand their ability to:

To develop and refine cinematography skills for theatrical and TV drama shooting, through discussion and practical demonstrations, to a high professional standard.

Dean will screen and discuss his film We Were Soldiers.

DELIVERY

The Masterclass will be held over a five-day period from 8 - 12 December 2003, Monday to Friday.

There will be screenings of work, discussions and practical on-set shooting demonstrations, which will then be screened and analysed.
