AFTRS targeting 2007 move to Fox precinct
Sydney - 14 September 2005
The Australian Film Television and Radio School (AFTRS) is looking to move to an inner-Sydney location in the second half of 2007, with the entertainment quarter adjoining Moore Park’s Fox Studios the preferred location.
Director of AFTRS Malcolm Long told Encore the school was currently in commercial negotiations with the lessors of that site and that the move was motivated by the crucial need for the school to forge closer ties with the production sector through being closer to the city.
“AFTRS is really chartered by its purpose – from the legislation that set it up – to provide education and training to emerging talent but also to the working industry, and this is particularly important in the current era,” said Long.
“Therefore, there’s a need for us to be close to the action. When we set up at [AFTRS’ current site] North Ryde the three television networks were all over in this direction but since that time they’ve moved towards the city, Fox Studios has opened and a lot of production-related companies are springing up in areas like Surry Hills and Ultimo.”
Long said the existing site had served the school well but AFTRS is “very committed to providing ongoing career opportunities and it’s often a challenge getting out here on Epping Road, whether that’s after work or at lunchtime”.
“We also want to have a building that is digitally ready,” Long said. “The facility needs to be more flexible, more able to bring together specialist areas, more able to support the collaborative function the school stands for and develop a technology strategy that is for the future. The school’s role is going to expand so it’s important to cater for that.”
While the location of the school would not necessarily impact on full-time students’ willingness to enrol, Long said “nearness of future employers” of these students was an important consideration. He also said closer proximity to the working industry would help the school attract more industry professionals to offer their services on the teaching side.
“AFTRS has always been able to attract good people but certainly for part-time and occasional contributors they’re more likely to come because of the location being more convenient. We’ve got excellent staff at AFTRS both in teaching and in the support areas and we’re going to do everything we can to make sure they all come with us.”
