On the Box

Sydney - 6 April 2006

6 April 2006 – 29 January 2007
Powehouse Museum, Sydney

For 50 years the box in the corner of the room has captured our imagination. On the box: great moments in Australian television is a landmark exhibition featuring classic clips and over 700 objects, including rare props, costumes and sets. From Graham Kennedy to World Series Cricket, the exhibition celebrates Australia’s rich history of achievement in television and explores the impact of the box on the lives of Australians.

On the box invites you to go behind the scenes of our most loved television programs and meet their stars, explore how programs are made, and rediscover the great television moments that shaped Australia’s cultural landscape.

The exhibition takes a journey through the genres of television programs: variety, comedy, children’s, drama, news and current affairs, game shows, reality and infotainment. It features costumes from classic shows such as Homicide, Prisoner, A Country Practice, Mother and Son, and Kath and Kim, familiar items ranging from the Play School windows to the Big Brother diary room chair, and original scripts from Skippy the Bush Kangaroo, The
Sullivans
, Neighbours and more.

Specially designed interactive exhibits allow you to try your hand at vision switching, play at being a network programmer or test your knowledge of TV trivia.
