TV Broadcasting In Australia Turns Fifty

Sydney - 1 February 2005

The Powerhouse Museum - 50 Years Of Television Exhibition

The 50th Anniversary of Australian television broadcasting occurs in 2006. The Powerhouse Museum in Sydney will mark this important occasion by developing a spectacular exhibition examining the impact of television on the lives of Australians since 1956.

Due to open in November 2005, the exhibition will showcase landmark programs and key personalities, as well as technology and behind the scenes production. A wide audience is anticipated to visit this exhibition, ranging from young children and students to adults who remember the first TV broadcasts. The exhibition will engage visitors in informative, entertaining ways. There will be unique interactive exhibits and thought-provoking displays that explore the role of television in the community. The exhibition will showcase the largest collection of TV costumes, props and memorabilia ever displayed in Australia.

The exhibition will also examine new developments in television technology with digital broadcasting, high definition services, data casting, web TV and other innovations.

The museum is particularly interested in borrowing or acquiring significant or historic technology, equipment, costumes, props, sets and TV memorabilia. If you have any memorabilia either at home or in the workplace that you would be interested in lending we would be more than happy to hear from you.  Any items that are loaned to the museum will be handled in a professional manner. Items will be covered by the Museum's insurance and returned to their owners at the end of the exhibition.

If you have anything you think might be of interest to the exhibition, please contact either Butch Calderwood ACS or John Leake ACS or email tv50@cinematographer.org.au. Photos of anything you may wish to contribute would be great so we can forward onto the organisers.
