77th Academy Awards Nominations
Los Angeles - 25 January 2005
Cate Blanchett received a nomination for Best Actress in a Supporting Role for her portrayal of Katharine Hepburn in Martin Scorsese’s film The Aviator while Sejong Park and Andrew Gregory’s film Birthday Boy was nominated for Best Short Film (Animated).
This is the second consecutive year an Australian animation has been nominated for an Academy Award with Adam Elliot’s Harvie Krumpet winning the prestigious award last year.
Directed by Sejong Park and produced by Andrew Gregory at the Australian Film Television and Radio School (AFTRS), Birthday Boy is set in the Korean War. It follows a young boy playing in the streets of his village, imagining his father fighting in the front line, the young boy celebrates his birthday alone only to return home to find a parcel at his doorstep. Thinking it is his birthday present, he opens the parcel, but its contents change his life forever.
Birthday Boy received numerous awards in 2004 including Best Short Animation at the Australian Film Institute (AFI) Awards, Best First Film at the Annecy International Animated Film Festival, Best Animated Short at Siggraph, Award for Distinction at the Prix Ars Electronica, Best Short Film at the Australian Effects and Animation Festival and the Dendy Award for Best Animation at the Sydney Film Festival.
Australian film laboratory and post production facility Atlab also worked with Best Cinematography Nominee , Director of Photography Zhau Xiaoding, on Zhang Yimou’s House of Flying Daggers.
Processing, image and sound post production and digital effects, and final prints were all carried out in Sydney by the same team that collaborated on Zhang Yimou’s previous film Hero.
Atlab’s Director of Productions and senior colourist Olivier Fontenay worked closely with the cinematographer to achieve the all-important look of the film, joining the production on location in China and in Ukraine in the northern hemisphere winter of 2003-4. All the original camera negative was shipped to Atlab in Sydney for rushes processing. Much of the material required special developing techniques such as force processing either one or two stops. Atlab’s expertise in managing this was well known by the Chinese production team following Fontenay’s previous collaboration with cinematographer Chris Doyle in Hero.
