Martin McGrath ACS named Cinematographer of the Year
Adelaide - 10 May, 2003
The 2003 Australian Cinematographers Society National Awards for Cinematography were held tonight (10 May) at a gala function in Adelaide, with Martin McGrath ACS winning the Milli Award for Cinematographer of the year for his cinematography on the Feature Film, “Swimming Upstream”
Attended by over 150 ACS members and industry people, McGrath was presented with the Milli Award (above right, with National President Milton Ingerson ACS and SAFC's David Minear) for his work on the feature about the true story of Tony Fingleton, a young man from a troubled family who found the inner strength to become a champion….
Swimming Upstream, set in 1950s Brisbane and based on Anthony Fingleton's autobiographical novel of the same name, starring veteran actors Geoffrey Rush and Judy Davis and feature Jesse Spencer in his first major movie role. Its about Tony (Spencer) beats the odds to become a champion swimmer in spite of an overbearing alcoholic father Harold (Rush), and his long-suffering but quietly heroic wife Dora (Davis). Always overshadowed in his father's eyes by his brothers Harold Jnr and John (David Hoflin and Tim Draxl), it is only when Tony displays an extraordinary swimming talent that he feels he has a shot at winning his father's heart and maybe even the Olympic gold.
The awards are the culmination of the 2002 State Awards from around Australia (held in November 2002), with the Gold winners going through to these national awards. 15 Golden Tripods in 18 categories were awarded, along with 4 members being inducted into the Hall of Fame. Queensland Member Geoff Owen was also awarded the Ross Wood Award to allow him to continue development and marketing of the Watoosie Dolly.
