AFTRS Cinematography Department Introduces Volunteer Trainee Scheme
Jan Kenny, AFTRS Head of Cinematography, has introduced a new volunteer trainee scheme in the AFTRS Cinematography Department to start this month.
Two candidates, Matt O'Brien and Natalie van den Dungen, have been invited to do a five-month attachment with the AFTRS Cinematography Department.
The aim of the scheme is two-fold. Matt and Natalie will be trained in the skills of clapper loader and focus puller and will fill these roles on the Graduate Diploma drama slate. The advantage for AFTRS students is that they will have a consistency in their crew that has been lacking in the past.
Both Matt and Natalie volunteered on AFTRS productions in 2002 and were chosen for the talent, professionalism and commitment they exhibited.
Natalie comes from a background in photography. Her credits as an AFTRS volunteer include A Simple Song, Painless and Ash Wednesday.
Matt studied computer science but after finishing his degree and travelling, he decided to pursue his dream of becoming a cinematographer. He has worked as a camera assistant on AFTRS productions including Press Any Button, She Touched Me There and Unified Field Theory. He describes the volunteer trainee scheme as a 'unique opportunity' which he hopes will offer a balance between practical knowledge and formal training.
