NSW President's Message

The NSW branch has again had a very successful year.
I would especially like to thank all the NSW sponsors who have again supported us this year and to the new sponsors who have joined us for the first time.

NSW has participated in many events over the last 12 months including the National Awards Dinner at the Manly Pacific Hotel, the Shadowcatchers book launch at AFTRS, the Photographers Exhibition at the ACS Headquarters and the Shadowcatchers book event, (the Cinematographers Forum) at the Cremorne Orpheum. All were very successful events.
The NSW /ACT awards were held for the first time at the Masonic Centre Sydney and it was a great night enjoyed by all. I congratulate all the members who received awards and wish the Gold winners luck in the upcoming National Awards to be held in Canberra on Saturday May 25th 2013.
Our regular 3rd Thursday “Drop Ins” offer the members a variety of guest speakers and introduces them to new equipment and ideas and are always well supported.
Our sponsor nights have also been very successful allowing them to exhibit new products to our members at the ACS headquarters.
I would like to thank the NSW committee for the time and effort that is required to run this branch of the society and for the participation of the members to make all these events a success.
Finally I would like to wish everyone a Merry Christmas and a prosperous New Year and I look forward to NSW having another great year in 2013. I hope you can make it to the Christmas drinks at the HQ next Thursday 20th.

December Drop In - Christmas Cheer

Our next drop in will be held on December 20th at ACS National HQ from 6pm.

The monthly Thursday night Drop In evenings continue to be extremely popular with members and sponsors alike and while there's nothing specifically planned for December it will be a great opportunity for members to get together for some Christmas Cheer.

It would also be a good time for those yet to visit to come along and see what the HQ is all about, don't forget the HQ is open to all members.

Thanks to Heidi Tobin, memories of the 2012 ACS NSW/ACT Awards can now be relived via Daniel Christie's photos of the evening which are now available for viewing at:

Mad Max Fury Road - Completes Principle Photography

David Burr & John Seale on location in Namibia

After shooting for nearly six months in the desert of Namibia, NSW members John Seale ACS ASC and David Burr ACS recently completed principle photography on the much anticipated Mad Max Fury Road.

In roles reprised from previous films John was once again at the helm of main unit and David in charge of second unit.

In support, and led by A camera focus puller Ricky Schamburg and 2nd AC/Coordinator Michelle Pizanis, an international camera department numbering thirty seven was drawn from Australia, New Zealand, South Africa and the USA - a large camera department by any standards.

Working in such close quarters for an extended period of time and in sometimes harsh conditions can obviously bring out the best and sometimes the worst in people but by all reports this camera crew worked well together from week one to week twenty three - a testament in part to the leadership qualities of both John and David.

This was John's first foray into the digital world and he chose to shoot with ARRI Alexa of which he had ten at his disposal - six Alexa Plus and four of the new Alexa M. Also in his camera arsenal were a selection of "semi disposable crash cameras", Canon 5D11's and Olympus OM-D E-M5's.

Hopefully ACS NSW will be able to coax John and David along to one of the very popular 3rd Thursday Drop Ins to share some of their experiences of working on this big budget high octane film.

Mad Max Fury Road is due for release in late 2013.
